Dry Ridge & Dry Verge’s Sunderland
If you are looking for a Dry Ridge or Verge System in Sunderland or the surrounding areas. We are a family-run business that prides itself on treating your home like it is our home.
Dry Ridge & Dry Verge Systems in Sunderland
Many roofs across Sunderland experience a familiar story of loose ridge tiles, crumbling mortar on the verges, and constant patch repairs after bad weather.
At Windsor Roofing, we install and repair dry ridge and dry verge systems in Sunderland and surrounding areas (up to around 45 miles). These modern, mechanically fixed systems are designed to keep your roofline secure, weather-tight, and far less reliant on traditional mortar that can crack over time.
What is a dry ridge system?
A dry ridge replaces the traditional sand/cement ridge bed with a mechanically fixed ridge system. Ridge tiles are fixed into place using a purpose-made system that allows for secure fixing and airflow at the top of the roof.
Why homeowners choose dry ridge:
- Stronger, more secure ridge line (especially in high winds)
- Less chance of cracks and gaps forming like with mortar
- Helps reduce ongoing maintenance
- A cleaner, more consistent finish
What is a dry verge system?
A dry verge is a system fitted to the edges of your roof (the “verge”) to protect and secure the outer tiles. It gives a smart edge detail and helps stop water getting driven underneath during heavy rain.
Benefits of dry verge:
- A neat, tidy finish along the roof edges
- Improved protection against wind-driven rain
- Helps prevent edge tiles working loose
- Long-lasting alternative to mortar verges

What People Say About Us

Debbie
Roof Replacement
"I can’t speak high enough of John and his son, Anthony. My 101 year old Mum had water coming in through her kitchen ceiling following a recent storm and my friend recommended these guys having used them extensively in the past. They came out and gave a quote. However, once they started the job it quickly became apparent that the job was a lot bigger than first anticipated thanks to some previous workmanship resulting in the wall not even being attached to the house!! The job was completed today and I’m over the moon with the result. Would not hesitate to recommend for any roofing jobs."

Window Fitting
"John and his team were great, John came out promptly and looked at the job in hand and provided a quote in a timely manner, once we booked the job he kept in contact to come out and fully measure up and then organised the window install, john kept me updated all the way through and as soon as the window was made and ready organised a date to complete the job ,John and his team were lovely and very professional, really great job completed and they tidied up everything after, we would definitely use them again "
Richard
New Roof
"We knew from the very first conversation with the lady in the office that this would be a great firm to deal with. We were given an appointment for a quote and Anthony turned up bang on time as agreed. We agreed the cost and timing straight away. This is a family business & John & Anthony were fantastic to deal with. You can really tell that they care about their work & have great attention to detail. Their team of roofers were a great bunch of guys & they tidied up afterwards. Highly recommended. Wouldn’t hesitate to use them again."
Dry Ridge & Dry Verge’s FAQs
Is dry ridge better than mortar?
In many cases, yes — especially for homes around Sunderland, where wind and driving rain can be a real test.
Traditional mortar ridge relies on the mortar staying bonded to the ridge tile and the tiles beneath. Over time, weathering, frost, and movement in the roof can cause it to crack, crumble, or lift, which is why you’ll often see loose ridge tiles after storms.
A dry ridge system is different. It’s mechanically fixed, using purpose-made fixings and clamps, and it’s designed to allow a small amount of movement without failing. That usually means:
- Better wind resistance (ridge tiles are physically secured)
- Less maintenance (no pointing cracking every few years)
- Improved ventilation along the ridge on many systems
- A cleaner, more consistent finish
It’s not that mortar is “wrong” — plenty of older roofs have done well with it — but if you’re looking for a modern, secure, lower-maintenance upgrade, dry ridge is often the sensible choice.
Can you install dry ridge on any roof?
Most pitched roofs can be upgraded, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all job.
Before fitting a dry ridge system, we’ll check things like:
- The condition of the ridge tiles (are they sound and reusable, or do they need replacing?)
- The top courses of tiles either side of the ridge
- The ridge line itself (straightness, previous repairs, signs of movement)
- The roof structure and fixings underneath
- Whether the roof needs any timber work or tidying at the apex before fitting the system
If the tiles are in poor condition, or the ridge has been patched repeatedly, it can still be upgraded — it just might mean replacing the ridge tiles as part of the job so everything is secure and tidy.
Do I need dry verge on both sides?
Only if your roof actually has two verges.
A verge is the edge of the roof where tiles finish against the gable wall. Some houses have:
- Two verges (typical on detached or semi-detached homes depending on roof shape)
- One verge and one party wall (where the roof meets next door)
- No verges on certain roof designs
Dry verge is most useful where you have exposed edges, because it:
- Secures the outer tiles
- Protects the edge from wind uplift
- Gives a sealed, neat finish that helps stop rain getting driven under the tile edge
- Avoids the ongoing issue of cracked mortar along the verges
We’ll quote based on what your roof genuinely needs — not what looks good on a generic price list.
Will it change the look of my roof?
It will change the look slightly, but in a good way most of the time.
Dry ridge and dry verge systems tend to look:
- Cleaner and more uniform
- Less “patchy” than older mortar lines
- More finished at the edges, especially on the verge
There are also different profiles and finish options, and we’ll recommend what suits your property style so it doesn’t look out of place. The aim is always the same: a roof that looks tidy, performs properly, and stays secure in Sunderland weather.
